Google Earth is a free download from Google that lets you zoom in on locations all over the earth and see a satellite view of the area.
MyMaps from Google is an online mapping application that lets you add text and points to a map and then save it both online and as a Google Earth file.
NASA also has a free satellite image software called World Wind. It has several options for viewing different satellite images including real time cloud cover and also topo maps. Here is a wiki on World Wind with lots of good links and info.
Virtual Earth from Microsoft is also a great way to get a birds eye view of things!
